Charging Access Becomes a Bigger Part of Electric Truck Funding

Ampol’s October announcements show infrastructure is moving, but operators still need to test assumptions carefully

Australia’s electric truck conversation has shifted from vehicle availability alone to the practical question of where, when and how commercial vehicles will charge.
Ampol’s October 2026 activity has made that shift clearer, with the company announcing a proposed acquisition of Evie Networks and a separate memorandum of understanding with Foton Mobility Distribution to explore charging solutions for electric commercial vehicles.

The larger of the two developments is Ampol’s 1 October announcement that it has entered an agreement to acquire Evie Networks for $225 million. The deal is subject to ACCC clearance and is expected to complete in the first half of 2027 if approved. Ampol said the transaction would add more than 1,030 EV charging bays and create a combined platform of about 1,425 bays across more than 400 sites nationally.

For truck buyers, the important point is not simply the headline number of charging bays. Heavy vehicles need different layouts, dwell times, power levels and route planning than passenger cars. That is why the Foton agreement matters. Ampol has said the memorandum will explore public AmpCharge sites, commercial hubs and private depot solutions, including compatibility testing between Foton trucks and Ampol charging equipment. It is a sign of progress, but it is not the same as a completed national truck-ready network.

From a finance perspective, charging confidence can influence several parts of the decision. A lender or business buyer may look more closely at whether the truck can complete its intended duty cycle, whether depot charging is available, how public charging will be used, and how downtime affects revenue assumptions. Electric trucks may also change budgeting because energy, maintenance, insurance, battery warranty and resale assumptions can differ from diesel vehicles. A repayment estimate can help model loan scenarios, but it will not capture every operating variable or confirm whether a vehicle suits a particular route.

The practical takeaway for operators is to treat infrastructure announcements as useful market signals, not as a substitute for due diligence. Before committing to an electric truck or any truck loans linked to one, businesses can generally benefit from documenting routes, payloads, charging windows, depot power constraints and backup plans. The market is moving in a more supportive direction, but finance decisions still need to be grounded in how the truck will earn, charge and stay productive in day-to-day work.
